Tony Cruz is part of an elite group of professionals in the horse racing industry to have established himself as a force to be reckoned with as a rider and a trainer. The son of former jockey Johnny Cruz, Tony was a champion apprentice who went on to become Hong Kong's most famous jockey. He is a six-time champion jockey and a two-time premier trainer. By the time Tony retired at the age of 39, he had ridden 926 winners. But he soon proved that he was not out of the game just yet. Instead, he rebounded with a vengeance as a trainer, being crowned champion trainer for the first time in 2000. he has since won 14 of the last 28 Group One races in Hong Kong over the past two seasons, and has been training winners at a better than 20% strike rate. He also won the Hong Kong Sprint and the Hong Kong Mile in December 2003.
